WILLIAM POWELL FRITH (1819-1909)

Ramsgate Sands (Life at the Seaside)

1851-54

RCIN 405068

This was the first of Frith’s paintings to depict the contemporary Victorian crowd rather than figures from history or literature. The artist included a self-portrait (peeping over the shoulder of the man on the far right), while the little girl paddling in the centre staring directly at the painter is thought to have been his daughter.

Purchased by Queen Victoria in 1854

No. 64
