Cimabue's Madonna Carried in Procession

A bright procession of revellers escorts a thirteenth-century altarpiece through the streets of Florence. Based on a story in Vasari’s Lives, this picture was the first major exhibit by the young Frederic Leighton, later President of the Royal Academy. Queen Victoria wrote that ‘Albert was enchanted with it – so much so that he made me buy it’.
