Conservator studying one of the Trinity Panels
The Trinity Panels by Hugo van der Goes

Move to new location at Scottish National Gallery provides opportunity for study

Conclusion

For now, our investigation is in the early stages and has only been carried out in-situ. We plan to fully conserve the panels and during the course of that work we would undertake a full technical examination of the artist's technique and materials, including XRF scanning to help determine the condition of the original paint layers, which will be essential to help solve the mystery of the king’s head.

As of 25 January 2017, the panels can be viewed in Room 3 at the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.
