The crossroads of Quatre Bras outside Brussels were of key strategic importance, and Wellington needed to defend them to prevent the Emperor taking the city. On 16 June, the allied army and part of the French army met at Quatre Bras. The battle was indecisive, with heavy losses on both sides.
