HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNGER (1497/8-1543)

Portrait of a Lady, perhaps Katherine Howard (1520-1542)

circa 1540

RCIN 422293

The eighteenth-century identification of the sitter in this miniature as Henry VIII’s fifth queen, Katherine Howard, remains uncertain, even though the sumptuous necklace that she wears appears to support her royal status. If the miniature does represent Katherine Howard, it must date from the short period of her ascendancy and reign as Queen c.1540.
