FRANK HURLEY (1885-1962)

The incipient stage of a pressure ridge

Sep 1915

RCIN 2580085

Two thick layers of ice are pushing up against each other as pressure from either side forces them together. Hurley’s photograph captures the vast scale of the Antarctic landscape, with the ship dwarfed by the striking, sharp-edged sheets of ice, rearing up under their own pressure.
