Charles II died on 6 February 1685 and was succeeded by his brother, James II. His coronation was also held on St George's day and despite public concern over his Catholicism, was widely considered to be a success. However, three years later when he was forced into exile, commentators remembered some unfortunate omens: the king's state crown appeared in danger of falling off and his canopy was torn during the procession.
