Rhodes, supposed site of the Colossus

The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was said to have straddled the entrance to the harbour into Rhodes Town. The Colossus was a statue of the Titan Helios, standing at about 30m (107ft) high. It was constructed to commemorate an unsuccessful siege of the island in 305 BC. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
