SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641)

The Infant Christ and St John the Baptist

c. 1639

RCIN 405630

This painting derives from a popular motif of the two infants embracing. The cross on top of the globe symbolises the salvation of the world through Christ’s resurrection. The scroll refers to Christ as the Lamb of God while the relationship of the two figures is a premonition of Christ’s baptism by John.
