Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900)

1856

Albumen print | 31.4 x 26.1 cm (image) | RCIN 2941853

Photograph of a full length portrait of Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900), seated on the ground outside. He holds a stick in his left hand. He wears shoes, knee-length socks, a kilt, jacket and hat. Photograph taken in Balmoral.

In 1856, Prince Alfred was shortly to leave his family in order to begin his naval career. The prince was photographed at least twice by Fenton at Balmoral. On both occasions, he appears to be lost in thought as he lies on the ground, dressed in his tweed jacket and kilt.
