Taking occultations

The physicist Reginald James (1891-1964) and Captain Frank Worsley (1872-1943) took advantage of the clarity of the Antarctic darkness to ’take occultations’ during the winter months. This included observing the local time at which the moon obscured certain stars, and comparing their results with the recorded times in the Astronomical Almanac.
