JOHN MICHAEL RYSBRACK (1693-1770)

Caroline, Consort of George II (1683-1737)

circa 1739

RCIN 31317

Since Queen Caroline died shortly after commissioning Rysbrack to create this bust and its pair (nearby), she was unable to sit to him. The likeness depends in many details on the Queen's profile by the painter Joseph Highmore (no. XX). Her elaborately dressed hair, intricately decorated with pearls, bears a high, jewelled diadem similar to those often portrayed on the goddess Juno. Commissioned by Queen Caroline Cat. 6
