GIOVANNI CARIANI (C. 1485-1547)

The Adoration of the Shepherds

c. 1515-17

RCIN 402846

Cariani’s early work shows the influence of Giovanni Bellini and the poetic subject matter of Giorgione. In this eccentric composition the tightly knit group of figures crowd together in front of a distant view of a lake and hills. To the right two more shepherds receive the news of Christ’s birth.
