This is an unusual view from Windsor Great Park, from a point slightly to the west of the top of the Long Walk. Though there is a clear view of the Castle on the horizon, the focus of the picture is really on the majestic elms and beeches framing the composition. Dwarfing both the Castle itself and the figure of the woodcutter, sitting, with his family and dog, at their feet, the trees emphasise the unusual portrait format of the view, and offer a subtly Romantic vision of nature.

Thomas Frowd was a landscape painter who enjoyed moderate success at London exhibitions from the 1840s onwards. This painting dates from the period between 1847 and 1858 when he was living at Windsor; it was bequeathed to Queen Victoria on the artist's death in 1864.
