A Pair of Armchairs

c.1780

RCIN 1141

Queen Charlotte’s botanical interests are reflected in the embroidered silk upholstery of these chairs. The botanically accurate covers may have been completed by 1777, when Mary Hamilton saw ‘one set of chairs are knotted floss silk of different shades sewn on to imitate flowers’. The stitches used by this date were increasingly long and straight. These were not only easier and quicker to sew, but also allowed for subtler shading. This was particularly useful when depicting abundant floral displays such as these.
