Cabinet

1640-90

Wood, black and gold lacquer, gilt bronze | 88.5 x 101.4 x 53.7 cm (whole object) | RCIN 35274

This arrangement recreates the dense displays of porcelain and lacquer created by Mary II (1662–94) at Kensington Palace and Hampton Court Palace. Matching pieces were gathered on chimneypieces and cabinets, or mounted on brackets and shelves over doorways. Together, they created dramatic areas of colour, enhanced by the dark walls of wood-panelled rooms.
