ALFRED EDWARD CHALON (1780-1860)

Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796-1817), Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld

c.1817-19

RCIN 405449

Princess Charlotte was the only child of George IV and Caroline of Brunswick. This portrait is by the Swiss artist Alfred Chalon who was famous for his luxurious depiction of fabrics. It was probably painted shortly after Charlotte’s marriage to Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1816. The princess’s death in childbirth only a year later occasioned nationwide mourning.

Presented to Queen Victoria, 1853
