Worn by The Queen for the official Opening of the Scottish Parliament, 1 July 1999. This ensemble was inspired the Scottish landscape reflecting the colours of thistle in the purple coat and heather in the pale moss green overlaid with silver lace of the dress. Born in Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Sandra Murray trained at Glasgow School of Art and continues to work in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. The shawl or plaid is of Isle of Skye tartan, which was woven on the Island of Lewis. The matching hat was designed by the milliner Philip Somerville and is of asymmetric shape with the brim upturned to one side, trimmed with feathers.
