PHILIPS WOUWERMAN (HAARLEM 1619-HAARLEM 1668)

Cavalry at a Sutler's Booth

c.1650-59

RCIN 404615

This scene captures the boisterous swaggering of soldiers who have drunk too much beer from the sutler’s tent (the camp convenience store). A man in profile blows his trumpet, another carries a girl on the back of his horse, and a pistol is shot in the air, perhaps to interrupt a quarrel. Acquired by George IV in 1812 No. 4
