KAREL DU JARDIN (AMSTERDAM C.1626-VENICE 1678)

A Shepherd Boy Asleep with a Cow and its Calf

c.1660-65

RCIN 404811

This idyllic pastoral scene indicates the unpredictability of nature. Du Jardin’s composition balances the sleeping boy and the resting cow. Only the standing calf is aware of the change in the weather. Acquired by George IV in 1814 No. 37
