PHILIPS WOUWERMAN (HAARLEM 1619-HAARLEM 1668)

A Horse Fair in front of a Town

c.1660-68

RCIN 405330

This scene demonstrates Wouwermans’ skill in depicting horses from various viewpoints. The toy stall on the left and a makeshift stage in the distance may accurately record the attractions of a Dutch fair, but the setting of the whole is imaginary. Acquired by George IV in 1814 No. 6
