With William of Orange about to enter the capital, James II fled London on 18 December 1688, effectively abdicating the throne. This print depicts episodes from this flight, including his welcome at the French court by his cousin Louis XIV. Above, the bust of Britain's new Protestant monarch William III is flanked by personifications of Justice, Vengeance, Truth and Eternity and the slogans NO MONARCHY (meaning no absolutist monarchy) and NO POPERY.
