This is a reworking of Nicolas Poussin’s painting of 1634 (a study for which is displayed below). Did Castiglione have access to the collection of the abbot Gian Maria Roscioli, the owner of the painting, or was he admitted to Poussin’s studio where he could have seen preparatory drawings? In either case, he was beginning to make important contacts in Rome. Cat. 12
