The Triumph of Bacchus c.1525-50
Pen and brown ink | 16.3 x 22.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 990489
-
A drawing of Bacchus in a chariot drawn by panthers, accompanied by cupids and other figures. A copy of part of a Roman sarcophagus now at Woburn Abbey. The old attribution was to Giulio Romano, but Popham (in P&W) recognised Girolamo da Carpi's distinctive style.
On the verso, a drawing of a cuirass in the antique style and part of a satyr-like telamon.
Inscribed at lower right in an old hand: 'di Pierino', presumably meaning Pierino da Vinci rather than Perino del Vaga. -
