Prince Fernando of Portugal, formerly Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was the son of the elder Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and subsequently a cousin of Queen Victoria. The young prince was married to Queen Maria II of Portugal by proxy on 1 January 1836. On his way to Portugal in March of that year, Prince Fernando made a stop in England to visit Princess Victoria and The Ducess of Kent. -
