Inscribed below mounted sheet: Q. Victoria's landing in France, Sept, 8th 1845.
Inscribed lower left: Copy by Princess Louise.
The royal family stayed overnight at the Château d'Eu as guests of Louis Phillipe, King of the French, before setting sail for Osborne House, their home on the Isle of Wight, the next day. In her journal entry for 8 September 1845, Queen Victoria describes how, on leaving the Royal Yacht, she and Prince Albert "got into the King's large Barge... Both standards were flown. Instead of going up into the Port, we went outside, & had to be dragged over the sands, by a bathing machine, which did very well, a number of poor men & women having to pull the boat safe to the shore". -
