A white marble fireplace surround, with projecting rounded ends, above two japanned metal figures, in Chinese-inspired dress, of a man and a woman, standing left and right respectively in niches, with painted gilt-bronze arches edged with stylised leaves and other decorations. The frieze is decorated by a sunflower flanked by serpent-dragons, with their bodies bending to encircle rosettes.
Provenance
Made in 1822 by Robert Jones and Parker for the Saloon at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton at a cost of £922. Moved to Buckingham Buckingham Palace circa 1845. -
