A watercolour depicting a scene taken from Macbeth (Act I, sc.iii). Macbeth (Charles Kean) and Banquo (Mr Graham) meet the three witches on the heath. This is taken from the production by Charles Kean, which was performed before Queen Victoria and the Royal Household on 4 February 1853, before opening at the Princess's Theatre in London on 14 February. The queen described it in her Journal as 'a most interesting, thrilling, & heartrending play', and commissioned Haghe to make four watercolours recording the production. Of these, one (921323) was mounted in Victoria's Theatrical Album, another (919794, showing the performance at Windsor) in her Souvenir Album and two (913000 and 913001) were hung at Osborne House.
Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria and hung at Osborne; on 14 July 1853 Haghe was paid 24 guineas for this and RCIN 913001 (Royal Archives PP2/2/3547)
