Skaters on a canal beside a country house
Pen and black ink with watercolour and bodycolour | 19.0 x 27.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 912900
-
A drawing of a scene on a frozen canal between a windmill on the left, and a country house, on the right. Several figures, some wearing muffs, stand on the terrace outside the house walls. Most other figures are on the ice and two sleighs pulled by horses speed across the ice from the left. Signed, bottom left margin: Jan Schoute inv: & Fecit. The artist's inscription and numbering suggest that this was executed as the model for an engraving.
