Guglielmo Faija's copy shows the Duke of Beja, aged ten, wearing military uniform with the ribbon of the Order of Christ. It is copied after a full-length watercolour sketch of Don João and his brother Don Fernando painted by Sir William Ross in Lisbon in 1852 (913832: Royal Collection) and forms part of a series of copies in miniature by Faija of the children of Maria II, Queen of Portugal.
Don João of Portugal, Duke of Beja, third son of Maria II Da Gloria, Queen of Portugal, and of Ferdinand, Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha died of typhoid in October 1861 alongside two of his brothers, Pedro V and Don Fernando.Provenance
