Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s youngest son. He entered the military after school, and served in the British Army for around 40 years. In 1882, Prince Arthur commanded the Guards Brigade at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir in Egypt and showed great courage under heavy fire.
Upon his triumphant return from the battle in 1882, Carl Rudolf Sohn painted a portrait of the Duke of Connaught in the uniform he wore during the Egyptian campaign (RCIN 405898). This portrait by Robert Anthoine Müller is a copy of Sohn’s painting, completed in the same year.
Robert Anthoine Müller principally worked as a copyist, notably after Royal portraits by Heinrich von Angeli.
