Presented to King George V in October 1927 by three of the painter's descendants: Miss Ethel, Miss Clementina and Mr Geoffrey Partridge. A label on the back of the frame in Queen Mary's handwriting records the gift. Another label in a modern hand states Her Majesty sat for every stroke / of this Study for the large portrait. It may be the preparatory sketch for the three-quarter length portrait of the Queen by the artist (403022).
