James Sant (1820-1916)
Queen Victoria with three grandchildren 1872
-
Queen Victoria is wearing the ribbon and star of the Garter and the badge of the Order of Victoria and Albert. Three of the children of the Prince of Wales are with her: Princess Victoria is sitting on her lap, Prince Albert Victor is leaning against the chair and Prince George is picking up some flowers from a basket to offer to his sister. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872.
In 1871 James Sant had been appointed Principal Painter with the responsibility for producing State Portraits of Queen Victoria, but the Queen disliked this portrait and refused to sit for a State Portrait, suggesting he take as a guide a portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. The Queen did not approve of the final official portrait either and stated 'that he was never to paint one again'.
Inscribed on the back with the names of the artist and sitters.Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria; recorded at Windsor Castle in 1878
