A Female Saint c.1507-24
Oil on panel | 61 x 44.6 x 3 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406697

The picture is a fine and characteristic work by Raffaellino del Garbo, which may be compared with the figure of Saint Catherine in his 'San Giovanni Gualberto' altarpiece of 1508 at Vallombrosa. The slightly more Raphaelesque forms - perhaps particularly inspired by Raphael's Saint Catherine of c.1507 (National Gallery, London), suggest a somewhat later date for this work.
This saint seen in half length may be Saint Catherine of Alexandria, but bears no obvious attributes. She is standing, facing the viewer, with her head turned half to the left and her hands raised before her in an attitude of prayer. She wears a blue dress with yellow sleeves and a red robe. In the background is an extensive mountainous landscape.Provenance
Bought for Prince Albert by L. Gruner of Signor Cianfanelli at Florence in 1847 for £90 as a Lorenzo di Credi (Rough Catalogue no 236); recorded in the Prince's Writing Room at Osborne House in 1876 (no 130), where it appears in James Robterts's watercolour of 1851 (RCIN 926224)
