This portrait head may be a study for the ambitious painting of a 'Royal Garden Party at Chiswick', by Desanges, c. 1875. In the large painting Princess Louise, wearing a similar blue and white dress, shyly clasps her father, Edward, Prince of Wales, around the waist. The finished painting, which apparently measured 16ft by 7ft, and included over 300 people, was destroyed in a fire at the Autotype Company in 1879. A photogravure and hand coloured photograph are in the Royal Collection (RCIN 503432, 630547).
Princess Louise (1867–1931) was the third child and eldest daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales (the later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra).
Related portraits of Edward, Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra are in the Royal Collection (RCIN 406738, 406737).Provenance
Presumably acquired by King Edward VII; first recorded in the Royal Collection in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II
