This painting is a copy of a portrait of Queen Victoria (RCIN 402242). In 1871 James Sant was appointed Principal Painter with the responsibility for producing State Portraits of Queen Victoria. The Queen, however, disliked the portrait he painted of her and her three grandchildren (RCIN 406763) and refused to sit for a State Portrait, suggesting he take as a guide a portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. The Queen did not approve of the final official portrait either and stated ‘that he was never to paint one again’. Signed in monogram: JS. Inscribed with the date either 1892 or 1902.
