Princess Charlotte of Prussia is shown with her head and shoulders in profile to the left. She is wearing a blue dress with a low back which is pleated around the neckline and a fringed white shawl. Landscape background.
Painted for Queen Victoria as a Christmas present, this work is inscribed on the back with the name of the sitter, as copied by the Crown Princess after Von Angeli and with the date 1878. The Crown Princess wrote to the Queen on 21 December 1877 to explain her present. 'You wished for a copy of Charlotte's Picture, so I made one, it is of course far from being a true copy of the lovely original H. V. Angeli did, but it is as correct & as like as I could make it and as I trust you will kindly accept it. I had such great pleasure in doing it for you though I found it horribly difficult.'Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria by the Crown Princess, 1878.
