William Cordon the Elder was a painter on china as well as a portraitist; much of his career was spent copying other portraits, which he did for George IV and Queen Victoria. His son William Corden the younger (1819-1900) was an even more active copyist. Nagle was an Irishman who served with distinction in the Royal Navy and became George IV's Groom of the Bedchamber n 1820. He is here shown wearing the Orders of the Bath and the Guelphic Order. In 1829 George IV paid Corden a very modest ten guineas for this original portrait and five for the gilt frame.
