A poor copy of an original painting by Ostade in a Scottish private collection. Three peasants are grouped around a table on which is a backgammon board; one, wearing a waistcoat and a tall hat, stands waiting to cast the die as his seated opponent makes his move; a third leans against the ledge of window which is ajar.
Provenance
Recorded in the collection of George IV in 1806; recorded in the Upper Anti Room at Carlton House in 1816 (no 144) and in the Dining Room in 1819 (no 68); though taken to Royal Lodge ('King's Lodge') at Windsor Park in 1824, it is in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace in 1841 (no 91)
