This painting is one of a set of four 'Virtues', the others being La Naïveté (RCIN 404538), Simplicity (RCIN 404782) and La Pudeur (RCIN 404627), painted for Queen Victoria by Hermann Winterhalter, the brother of Franz Xaver Winterhalter. The Queen and Prince Albert were in Coburg on 26 August, his actual birthday, so the Queen had already given Albert some of his presents on 28 July, including 'a beautiful head by Hermann Winterhalter, which has been specially painted for Albert'.
