This is a typical study-head of the circle of Rembrandt, in this case signed and dated by this Amsterdam artist, who is no relation of his famous namesake. The old woman is shown wearing a fur-trimmed dark cloak and turning the pages of an open book which rests before her.

Purchased by Prince Albert in 1841 as the work of Gebrand van den Eeckhout
