Leopold, Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, later Leopold I, King of the Belgians (1790-1865) 1816
Oil on canvas | 21.4 x 18.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406340

An early label on the back of this picture states that it was painted in 1816 for the purpose of being engraved, that it subsequently belonged to the artist's brother. If this is true then this portrait may be the means by which Dawe, a specialist mezzotinter, came to the attention of Prince Leopold as a painter. It is certainly a fresh and spirited oil sketch.
