Nothing is known of the artist who signed this work and whose name is recorded in the Osborne Inventory of 1876. This landscape is characteristic of the mid-nineteenth century in the way it recreates the feel of Dutch seventeenth century art, in this case the landscapes of Allart van Everdingen and Jacob van Ruisdael.
A cataract rushing over and between large boulders, with overhanging trees including silver birch; a woman walks towards the bank on the right, carrying a water jug; a thatched homestead is seen on the right beneath a steep, rocky escarpment.
