Oil on canvas | 76.4 x 63.9 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406171
-
Christ at half-length, moves to the right, bearing the large wooden cross over His left shoulder; wearing a red gown with a green wrap about His arms and the Crown of Thorns on His head; a rope is loosely tied about His neck. Dark background.
Provenance
Possibly the painting of slightly smaller dimensions recorded by Van der Doort in the Long Gallery at Whitehall in 1639 (no 81); this is listed at Whitehall in 1666 (no 88) and 1688 (no 420); certainly the work of the same size described in the Presence Chamber at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 31)
