Portrait of the Artist c. 1672-76
Oil on canvas | 77.3 x 65.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406034
-
This painting is probably a studio version derived from Lely's Self Portrait with Hugh May at Audley End (c.1675). RCIN 406034 is first recorded with certainty at Carlton House in 1816, although Vertue records a self-portrait by Lely in the collection of Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1750 and it is possible that the current portrait belonged to the Prince.
Provenance
Possibly the self portrait by Lely, presumably acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales, hanging in the State Bedchamber at Leicester House in 1749; certainly recorded in store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 368) and 1819 (no 235); in the Portrait Gallery at Hampton Court in 1861 (no 882)
