Oil on canvas | 100.7 x 75.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405500

This is one of a number of pictures of saints by Fetti in a similiar format, possibly from more than one series. Here Saint Charles Borromeo (1538-1584), Cardinal Archbishop of Milan, is easily identifed by his robes and characteristic physiognomy. He is shown almost in profile, looking upwards to the right with a halo above his head and his hands clasped to his breast in devotion. Canonized in 1610, he had close links with the Gonzaga family, who may have been the original owners of this picture.
Provenance
Presumably acquired by Charles I; sold to Jackson and others as a set of seven for £42 from Hampton Court on 23 October 1651 (no 131); recovered at the Restoration and listed in the Long Matted Gallery at Whitehall in 1666 (no 41)
