Albrecht Adam (1786-1862) was known as a painter of military subjects. In 1809 he followed the French and Bavarian armies into battle against the Austrians, and a few years later he was appointed to the court of Bavaria. His scenes from the 1812 campaign include the Battle of Moscow (The Hermitage, Moscow), and Napoleon Surrounded by his Staff Officers. In 1859 he followed the army of Napoloeon III against Austria, producing a considerable quantity of drawings. In addition to military scenes Adam painted portraits, landscapes and some equine subjects, which he also represented in etchings.
In the foreground of a stable two donkeys stand on the left, one of them looking over a stall at a white horse, which, together with a dappled grey and a bay, is tethered to a trough; in the background, through a doorway, a milkmaid is busy milking.Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert, on his birthday, August 26 1845; recorded at Osborne House 1876.
