Vessels off the Dutch Coast in a Moderate Breeze Signed and dated 1671
Oil on canvas | 38.4 x 55.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405213

This small canvas shows modest Dutch shipping dealing with blustery weather: a small fishing pink to the left, a ‘kaag’ to the right all but concealing a ‘smalschip’. The dramatic pattern of clouds, with a dark low-lying bank to the left, may be intended to indicate that a storm has just past; this might explain the way in which the near ships are working to raise their sails. Inscribed ‘W. V. Velde 1671.’
Provenance
