Oil on canvas | 69.6 x 86.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405202
-
This portrait can be dated c. 1650 by comparing the costume of the hunter with that which appears in Potter's 'Two Sportsmen' (CW 156, 400942). Though acquired as a Cuyp portrait of the Prince of Orange (presumably believed to be William II) neither the artist nor the sitter can be recognised. In the centre foreground a man on a chestnut horse facing to the right, where on the extreme right are two gamekeepers with dogs that are sniffing dead game; one gamekeeper loads a rifle; in the distance huntsmen converge on two deer.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV in 1803 as a Cuyp portrait of the Prince of Orange; recorded in the anti-room to the Dining Room at Carlton House in 1816 (no 101); in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace in 1841 (no 71)
