Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, is shown with head and shoulders to the front in evening dress with the Riband and Star of the Order of the Garter. The eighth child and fourth son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Leopold was later created Duke of Albany, Earl of Clarence, and Baron Arklow. Leopold had haemophilia, which led to his early death at age 30. This portrait was painted for Queen Victoria. On 23 April 1877, at Windsor, she 'went to see Leopold sitting to Angeli who has just come'; and who received £157 10s for the portrait in May 1877.
